How to Make Succulent Soil

One of the biggest mistakes most people make with succulents is overwatering. Too much water will always kill your succulents, and that's why this homemade succulent soil is so special: even if you DO overwater by accident, there is enough sand in there to absorb it!

To make your own succulent soil, you'll need three ingredients:

  • Potting Soil
  • Coarse Sand (turface and poultry grit also work well!)
  • Perlite or Pumice
  1. Use an all purpose indoor potting soil. Steer away from heavy potting soils and don't use any that contain vermiculite or any type of moisture control potting mix that will retain water.
  2. Succulents will grow at their best in porous sandy potting soil, so make sure you amend the soil with sand. You can purchase regular sandbox sand at your local home hardware store.
  3. Perlite or pumice is a lightweight, organic soil amendment that retains very little moisture.

You'll Need:

  • 3 parts potting soil
  • 2 parts coarse sand
  • 1 part perlite or pumice

Directions:

  1. In a large bucket or bowl, add all of your ingredients and mix well using your hands or a trowel.
  2. Now you're ready to grow your own succulents in your very own, homemade succulent soil.
  3. Any leftover succulent soil can be stored in a cool, dark area such as a basement.

Happy Planting!
